Consultant-led care on Harley Street
Know Who You Are Seeing on Harley Street
Harley Street has a number of breast clinics along it. From the outside they look much the same, and the address on its own tells you very little about who will examine you, who will plan your treatment, and who will be in theatre on the day.
Who will examine you?
Who will plan your treatment?
Who will be in theatre on the day?
Those are three separate questions. They do not always have the same answer.
Mr D. B. Ghosh is a consultant breast and oncoplastic surgeon who sees private patients at the Rapid Diagnostic Centre, 146 Harley Street, London W1G 7LD. He holds dual European Board certification in breast surgery and surgical oncology, and performs breast cancer surgery at The London Clinic in Marylebone.
What Patients Say
Feedback from men and women who have chosen consultant-led breast surgery in London.
He was kind, caring, and deeply compassionate, always taking the time to explain everything clearly and reassure us when we needed it most. Every promise he made, he kept and more than that, he exceeded every expectation we had.
When hope felt fragile, Mr Ghosh gave it back to us. His calm presence, humility, and genuine dedication to his patients are truly remarkable. He is an incredible surgeon and an even more incredible human being, and we will always be profoundly grateful for the care he gave Mum and our family.
I initially had a mastectomy, and my surgery was successful. 3 years later, and I had a delayed LD Flap reconstruction and I could not be happier with the results. Dr Ghosh is very skilled at his work this definitely shows with the final outcome.
Dr Ghosh has a caring nature is very knowledgeable, at all times professional, takes pride in his job, has high standards and it definately shows. He has cared for me and made me feel at ease. No questions went unanswered and I felt supported in my choices at all times.
I felt genuinely cared for during all my visits and procedures and could not ask for a better Surgeon. I feel really lucky to have had Dr Ghosh and I cannot thank him enough, he is an excellent Dr!
Consultant continuity
Check Who Will Perform Your Operation
A question that comes up often in clinic is whether the person you meet at the first appointment will be the person holding the instruments. It is a reasonable thing to ask, and it is worth asking of any surgeon you see.
Consultant continuity Who Leads Your Care?
Here, your consultation, your surgical plan and your operation are led by Mr Ghosh personally. The same consultant reviews your imaging, explains the options, and performs the procedure.
Appointments and referrals Private, NHS and Referral Options
Both private and NHS patients are seen. Private patients can self-refer, so no GP referral is needed to book. Referrals from GPs, consultants and hospital breast services are also accepted, including two-week-wait referrals. Appointments are often available within a few days.

Know Where Your Surgery Actually Happens
Patients rarely think to ask where the operation itself will take place. The consulting room address and the operating theatre address are frequently different buildings, and it helps to know both before agreeing to anything.
Assessment happens on Harley Street. Surgery happens at The London Clinic, a short walk away in Marylebone, where Mr Ghosh holds the role of Divisional Director. NHS patients are seen through the Royal Free Hospital breast unit in Hampstead.
The Harley Street clinic has digital mammography with tomosynthesis, high-resolution ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsy on site, which is what makes same-day breast assessment possible in a single visit lasting one to two hours.

Operations performed
See Which Operations Are Performed Here
Breast-conserving surgery
Removes the tumour with a margin of healthy tissue around it and keeps the rest of the breast. Radiotherapy usually follows.
Therapeutic mammoplasty
Combines cancer removal with breast reshaping in one operation. It suits patients with larger breasts particularly well, because the reshaping works with the tissue that is already there.
Mastectomy
Simple, skin-sparing and nipple-sparing techniques. The sparing variants are what allow reconstruction to be carried out at the same time.
The mastectomy options in detailSentinel lymph node biopsy
Checks whether cancer has reached the lymph nodes. OSNA testing analyses the node during the operation itself, so in many cases the result is known before you wake and a second admission is avoided.
Chest wall perforator flaps
A specialised reconstructive technique using tissue from the chest wall. Mr Ghosh is also involved in LYMPHA surgery, which aims to reduce the risk of lymphoedema after lymph node surgery.
Reconstruction can be discussed at the same time as your cancer surgery, or much later. There is no deadline on that decision. Rebuilding after surgery covers the options in full.
Credentials explained
Ask What the Certifications Mean
Qualifications after a surgeon's name are difficult to read if you have never had reason to. Here is what these ones mean in practice.
FEBS stands for Fellow of the European Board of Surgery, awarded after formal examination. Mr Ghosh holds it in both breast surgery and surgical oncology, which is an unusual combination, as most surgeons certify in one or the other. He is separately listed as a Board Certified Cosmetic Breast Surgeon under the Royal College of Surgeons certification scheme, which you can check yourself on the register.
He also advises NICE, the body that sets clinical standards for the NHS, as an expert in breast surgery. GMC number 4657664. His full training and appointments are set out on the about page.

Independent second opinion
Bring Your Reports for a Second Opinion
Asking for a second opinion is a normal part of cancer care and any surgeon will expect it.
Doctors seek a colleague's view on complex cases routinely, so the request is unlikely to cause offence.
It also does not commit you to changing anything. Keep any tests or treatment you already have booked, because a second opinion sits alongside your existing plan rather than replacing it. Plenty of patients take the review back to their own team and carry on exactly as before.
If you have been given a surgical plan and want it looked at independently, bring your imaging and pathology reports to the appointment. You will get a considered view on the options open to you.
Appointments available on Harley Street or by video consultation.
Do I need a GP referral to see a breast cancer surgeon privately?
No. Private patients can book directly without a referral. Referrals from GPs, consultants and hospital breast services are also accepted, including urgent two-week-wait referrals.
Where on Harley Street is the clinic?
Consultations take place at the Rapid Diagnostic Centre, 146 Harley Street, London W1G 7LD. Surgery is carried out at The London Clinic on Devonshire Place, a few minutes away.
How quickly can I be seen?
Private appointments are often available within a few days. Urgent cases are prioritised. Clinic hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00, and Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 17:00.
Will the surgeon I meet be the one who operates on me?
Yes. Mr Ghosh carries out the assessment, agrees the surgical plan with you, and performs the operation.
How many breast cancer operations does the surgeon carry out?
Surgical volume is a fair thing to ask about, and you do not have to take anyone's word for the answer. Activity data for consultants practising privately in the UK is published independently by PHIN, the Private Healthcare Information Network, which collects it separately from the surgeons themselves. Mr Ghosh's profile there is public.
What is the difference between a breast surgeon and an oncoplastic breast surgeon?
An oncoplastic breast surgeon combines cancer surgery with reconstructive technique. In practice it means the shape of the breast after surgery is planned alongside the removal of the cancer, rather than considered afterwards.
Harley Street consultation
One Appointment Is Not a Commitment
It is easy to treat booking a consultation as though it settles something. It does not. A first appointment is a conversation about what is actually going on and what your options are. You can leave it there, take the findings to anyone else you wish, and decide in your own time.
To arrange that conversation, call the clinic or send a message.
Consultant-led. Private and NHS patients seen. No referral needed for private appointments.
Bring Whatever You Already Have
If you have had a scan, a biopsy or a letter from your GP, bring it. If you have nothing at all and simply want something looked at, that is equally fine. Either way you will leave knowing what is going on and what the options are.
Appointments at Harley Street usually run one to two hours, which is long enough to examine, image and biopsy in the same visit where that is needed.
Consultant-led. Private and NHS patients seen. No referral needed for private appointments.
