Nipple Correction
People with inverted nipples tend to feel self-conscious or embarrassed about their bodies, which interferes with quality of life. Others may be more concerned with the physical discomfort caused. Although seldom talked about, as much as ten percent of the UK population have an inverted breast. Harley Street Breast Clinic can fix this condition with a simple nipple correction procedure performed under local anaesthetic.
What causes nipple inversion?
Inverted nipples are caused by an imbalance between the inward traction of the breast ducts and the traction of the muscle within the nipple that keeps them erect. This may be caused by:
- Genetics
- Pregnancy
- Lactation
- Trauma
- Excess nipple tissue
The different types of inverted nipples
- Type 1: The nipples are only inverted some of the time, and protrude in response to temperature change and arousal. Breastfeeding is normally not a problem.
- Type 2: The nipples can protrude outwards, but only with finger pressure. Breastfeeding will be difficult at times.
- Type 3: The nipples are completely and permanently inverted. This can interfere with your ability to breastfeed.
Are there any risks?
Risks and complications rarely occur with nipple correction. There is a chance you may be unable to breastfeed following the procedure. Your breast surgeon on Harley Street will discuss this with you at your consultation.
What does the procedure involve?
Your treatment will be planned and performed by specialist consultant breast surgeon in London, Mr. D.B. Ghosh.
The procedure will be carried out under local anaesthetic and lasts around thirty minutes — fifteen minutes per nipple. You may also choose to have other procedures done at the same time, such as, breast enlargement or breast reduction surgery, which will lengthen the treatment.
Your breast surgeon in London will use one of two methods to correct your inverted nipples depending on the nature of your individual case.
Method 1: An incision will be made around the nipple to release the milk ducts responsible for the inverted nipple. Soluble sutures are then used to hold the nipple up while it heals.
Method 2: An incision will be made around the nipple to divide or separate the milk ducts internally, which allows the nipples to sit naturally.
What does recovery involve?
Nipple correction is a simple procedure performed under local anaesthetic, so you will be free to return home as soon as you feel ready. You can expect to feel mild discomfort which can be relieved with pain medication. In most cases, patients return to work in just one or two days.
