Boob Job Explained

Cosmetic surgery for breast enlargement — more commonly known as a ‘boob job’ — is performed to make the breasts permanently larger, fuller, and firmer. To achieve this, breast implants are inserted underneath the natural breast tissue. The intended result is a size and shape which fits your frame comfortably and improves your appearance.

If you’ve always wished for bigger breasts, or if they’ve lost volume following weight loss or pregnancy, breast enlargement may be the perfect solution.Women experience many benefits after London breast augmentation, including:

  • Greater self-esteem
  • Fuller breasts
  • A more feminine, curvy figure
  • Wearing the clothes you want
  • Breasts in better proportion to the rest of your body
  • Silicone implants
Silicone implants are filled with a thick gel that is generally considered to provide the most natural results. As they hold shape even when ruptured, women are encouraged to have regular MRI scans to check all is well.
  • Saline implants
Saline implants are comprised of sterile saltwater. They are cheaper and require smaller incisions than silicone. If they were to rupture, the implants noticeably deflate and the body can safely absorb the saline solution.

At your consultation, you will discuss the pros and cons of both types of implants. Mr. D.B. Ghosh will recommend whether silicone or saline implants are best for your case, but you are free to make the final decision.

Breast enlargement is performed under general anaesthetic at our breast clinic on Harley Street, and lasts for around one to two hours.

Depending on your treatment plan, your surgeon will make small incisions either under the arms, under the breasts, down the side of the breasts, or around the areolas.

The implants will then be inserted either under the natural breast tissue or under the breast muscle. The incisions will then closed with stitches.

The incisions will be made as discreet as possible to minimise scarring. Your surgeon will discuss where your incisions will be made and what your scarring will look like at your consultation.

After your procedure: You will spend at least one night in hospital where we monitor you closely. You will wear a special post-operative bra for comfort and support. This allows your breasts to heal and keeps the implants in the correct position.

One week after: Get plenty of rest at home and avoid strenuous activities for the next few weeks. Take pain medication and place ice packs over your breasts. Gentle stretching when you feel like it will help circulation. You will have a follow-up appointment to have your dressings removed. Patients tend to take around one week to ten days off work to recover.

3-6 months after: You will look and feel great. Your scars will be healing well and you will getting back to your usual routine and activity level.

Risks are inherent in any surgical procedure. At your consultation, your surgeon will explain the risks of breast augmentation, and how they are dealt with if they happen. The risks include:

  • Capsular contracture
  • Rupture
  • Creases or folds
  • Rotation
  • Permanent or temporary loss of nipple sensation
